Charlie Gallacher was a long time Celtic player, spending more than 10 years at the club. He was mainly a backup for Bertie Auld but he still usually played about 20+ games a season in the centre of midfield, although he started his career as a right winger and could play on both sides of the pitch. He was a pretty static player, not known for his defensive work or fighting spirit, but he was an excellent passer and possessed a powerful shot with both feet, and he had a pretty good scoring record for a central midfielder. He was also the regular corner taker when he was on the field and this is where his two most famous moments came, corners onto the head of Billy McNeill to score the winners in both the 1965 Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline and the European Cup semi final in 1967 against Vojvodina in the last minute, to send Celtic through to the most famous game in the club's history. Although Gallacher didn't play against Inter in Lisbon, his contribution and legacy were sealed with that corner. Gallacher also made history for being the first of many Scottish-born players to play for the Republic of Ireland national team. He made two appearances for his parent's nation of birth in 1967.
