Defence MindedINFO:Gillard was a left-back who formed a formidable partnership with right-back Dave Clement in Queens Park Rangers. He played 485 matches for QPR from 1968 to 1982 and retired in 1986 after a four-year spell in Aldershot. He capped 3 times England in 1975.
Gillard was a strong and tough defender whose trademark was the tackle with the left-foot. He was fine at distributing the ball, especially when he delivered long curled balls out of defence towards Dave Thomas, who was running down the right wing. Instead, he rarely pushed forward since he was a solid defensive player who preferred staying in the back to stop the counter-attacks. The rare occasions when he stayed in attack happened during a corner for his team. He had good movements despite his imposing size and was very careful at covering. In fact he was very helpful at the near-post to cover it during a corner for the opponents.
