Marini was a defensive or central midfielder. He spent most of his career at Inter from 1975 to 1986 − when he retired − playing 375 matches and scoring 13 goals. He played also for Fanfulla, Varese, Reggina and Triestina. He capped 20 times for Italy, winning the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
Marini wanted to be an attacking midfielder at the start of his career but his technique wasn't considered good enough, he wasn't very fast and his movements in the run weren't elegant. He was though gifted with superb teamwork and tactical intelligence, great passing ability and iron lungs to support the team for the entire match. So, he was used in front of the defence with interdiction and covering duties but also as playmaker from the back. Moreover, he was effective near the opposing box thanks to a dangerous long range shot, which he was a specialist of.
