Novellino was a midfielder or forward. During his first spell at Perugia, from 1975 and 1978, he was mainly a side midfielder or inside forward. In his time at Milan, from 1978 to 1982, he was mostly used as more advanced winger and scored 14 goals in 151 matches. He had a second spell at Perugia between 1984 and 1986, scoring for the Grifoni a total of 14 goals in 138 games. He played also for Legnano, Torino, Cremonese, Empoli, Ascoli and Catania, retiring in 1987. He capped once for Italy in 1978.
Novellino was a combative, quick and agile offensive player. He was short but gifted with a well-built physique. He had good temperament and excellent technique. He liked to challenge and mock the opponents, persistenly looking to dribble them everytime they tried to put him down. His playstyle reminded that of an attacking midfielder but his versatility made him capable to play well also on the flank, where he was mostly used. He was a decent scorer, also reactive in the box and capable with the head. He was though mainly an assist-man, an efficient playmaker and crosser who created favourable situations for his teammates. All that when he wasn't too selfish and didn't decide to overdue with personal actions. Beautiful personal goal against Cesena First time goal against Milan Header against Milan Goal from free kick against Hellas Verona Header against Hellas Verona Powerful first time goal against Catanzaro
