INFO:

Hans-Jürgen Wittkamp was the legendary libero of great Gladbach team from 70's. A ‘classic’ defensive libero for most of his career, Jürgen Wittkamp began as a central forward in the mid-1960s but soon was retrained as a libero around 1970. Despite his beginnings as a forward, as libero Wittkamp was not known to foray much into the opposing half as he liked to confine himself (or was told so by his manager) to defensive tasks. In his role as a defensively-minded libero, Wittkamp impressed with his good control and his good eye. He was very strong in the air and a focal point of the Borussia Mönchengladbach team of the 1970s. Even when he played in midfield, he wasn't known as some great runner. He scored lot of goals even when playing in defence, mainly thanks to his fantastic heading but also with his foot, besides he had excellent reactions and positioning on rebounds in the box. Wittkamp started his Bundesliga career in 1967 at FC Schalke 04 as a striker and midfielder. He transferred in 1971 to Borussia Moenchengladbach and at Bökelberg celebrated his greatest successes, mostly as a sweeper. At the end of his career, he moved in 1978 SpVgg Erkenschwick in the highest amateur league and 2nd Northern Premier league. He was involved as Schalke player in the Bundesliga scandal and later as Gladbach player, Essen state court finally convicted him. After that, he was with the Borussia 1975, 1976 and 1977 German Champion and in 1973 DFB Cup winner. His greatest international triumph he celebrated by winning the 1975 UEFA Cup and in 1977 he reached the final of the European Champions Cup against Liverpool. Wittkamp played 280 times in the First Bundesliga, scoring 58 goals. In the second division he made 36 appearances in which he scored twice.
