Defence-MindedINFO:A player of enthusiasm, strength and physical presence with an important technique, dedication and impetus. A marker of the most dangerous striker, with great capacity for recovery, good jumping, elastic waist to stir and wisdom to anticipate the position. His marking on Cruyff was unbelievable and still remembered today. Granada at those years had that bad reputation of a tough (almost violent) team which overshadowed a great football that gave memorable afternoons to its fans. The toughest defense of the time was probably in Granada. Fernández played in pair with another violent player - Aguirre Suárez but also there were Castellanos, Jaén, Montero... They were scary. It was impossible to pass through there... They were fearsome.
"He weighs 80 kilos and when he starts it looks like a miura is coming down on you"
"In Granada there was a certain Fernández, who broke Amancio's quadriceps"
Did Fernández have a murderous instinct? Did he injure half of the Spanish league? Was he the main protagonist of numerous and notorious affairs of the late sixties and early seventies? Fernández was not a saint, no.
Fernández spent his entire career in Spain with Barcelona and Granada. He joined La Liga side Barcelona in 1967 and went onto play eight times over two seasons with the club; his final match for Barcelona was a 1–1 draw with Valencia on 16 April 1969. Ahead of the 1969–70 campaign, Fernández joined fellow La Liga club Granada. He made his Granada debut in September 1969 in a 0–1 win versus Pontevedra. Fernández remained with Granada until 1978 which included two hundred and twenty appearances and five goals. He holds the record for most appearances in La Liga for Granada (172).
