One of the club's most prominent players in the 1960s and 1970s, he always played as a central defender. Because of his charisma he served during those years as captain of the team. In 1973 he was named best Gipuzkoan athlete of the year. He contributed decisively to consolidating the club in the First Division and participated in the two fourth places (1973-74 and 1974-75 seasons) that qualified the club for the first time in its history to participate in the UEFA Cup. It was not until 1974 that he lost the starting position he had obtained since his arrival at the team.
Club president Antxon Vega de Seoane gave him the Real Sociedad captain's armband when José Mari Martínez was just 22 years old and a newcomer to the first team. His appointment as captain by decree and above much older players was due to the player's strong personality and leadership skills. He was captain of the team that achieved promotion in 1967 and qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time in 1974. José Maria defended the Sociedad shirt in a total of 373 official matches.
