Thissen was a physically imposing left side back who was able to play as a center back or wing back too. He was strong and fast player who joined attack regularly and never hesitated to take a shot. He possessed decent technique but he mostly relied on his physical attributes. He was good at defensive positioning and also had great reactions when taking the ball away from the opponent. He wasn't much of a crosser. He was a part of Belgian NT at 1970 World Cup and Euro 1972.
