Cavallo was a defender, mainly right-back or sweeper. He played most of his career at Pisa: 163 matches between 1985 and 1990. He spent seasons also at Udinese and Taranto.
Gifted with a well built physique, Cavallo used his strength rather than pure defensive abilities to challenge his opponents in 1-on-1 situations. Capable to deliver good long passes from the back, he also pushed forward despite not being very fast nor an accurate shooter − he never scored a goal for Pisa − while he could be dangerous when sending early crosses from the side to the box.
