INFO:

David McCreery was an all action midfielder who starred in two World Cups for Northern Ireland as one of their most consistent players of the 80s. He mostly played as a nippy ball winning midfielder, but was extremely versatile, playing in every position bar goalkeeper at some point in his career. He was a midfield all-rounder with no real weaknesses in his game, and his energetic playing style made him a tough opponent. As a defensive midfielder he somewhat lacked positional discipline but more than made up for it with his enthusiastic attitude, his willingness to chase the ball relentlessly for 90 minutes meaning he often intercepted loose passes, and he had solid tackling ability. He started his career as a versatile bench player for Manchester United before leaving for America; after returning, he played for Newcastle for 9 years, racking up almost 300 appearances for the club. He played an important role in the legendary Northern Ireland team at the 1982 World Cup, notably against hosts Spain, where he began in midfield but transitioned to left back after his team went down to 10 men with half an hour to go. He gave a fantastic performance there, completely shutting down Real Madrid legend Juanito and helping his team to hold on to win the game.
