INFO:
Catalano was an attacking midfielder, regared as one of the best ever players in the history of Messina. His career began in 1977 at Potenza, where he played 89 matches and scored 26 goals until 1982, when he transferred to Akragas. In the middle, he played 3 Serie A games with Pistoiese in 1980-81. In 1984 he joined Messina, where he had the best time of his career: 142 league matches, 40 goals and was a key player in a team that remained undefeated in home matches for two seasons and eliminated Roma from Coppa Italia. In 1988-89 he played for Udinese, helping the team reaching the promotion to Serie A. The following season he had the chance to play 2 last games in the Italian top division. Then he spent seasons with Triestina, Reggina, Akragas again, Catania and a few minor teams in Serie D before retiring in 1998.
Catalano was a talented player, able to charm the crowd due to his playstyle, gifted with enough good skill to break through Italian football. Unfortunately his career went on differently. He could do whatever he wanted with the ball on his feet: dictate the rhythm, dribble the opponents, trick the goalkeeper out of goal with a lob shot, score or cross, take free kicks and corners. In a memorable 6-0 win against Monopoli, he dribbled half of his opponents and eventually scored. He was loved thanks to his class. However he was also hated sometimes because of a lack of mentality that led him to make many mistakes.
