INFO:
Vincenzo Romano was a defender, right or centre back and later also sweeper. His professional career began at Rimini in Serie B in 1976. He transferred to Avellino two years later. He played 38 Serie A games in two seasons − not too many − but he did well and Roma decided to buy him in 1980. Only one season with the Giallorossi and 22 matches. He had more chances at Genoa, playing 73 times in Serie A and 84 in all competitions from 1981 to 1984. After a very good Serie B season at Bologna, he came back at Avellino for three more years: 52 leagues matches this time − 104 in his whole time with the club. He retired in 1989 after a year spell at Empoli.
Romano was a strong and valid defender, an insurmountable wall, gifted with good timing of interception and great leap. He was a good header and, in fact, with an accurate header he scored one of the first important goals in the history of Avellino in a 1-0 win against Milan: he received a perfect cross from Mario Piga, jumped higher than Baresi and Collovati, hit the ball and beat Albertosi. Another great goal was a right-footed volley in a 2-1 win against Juventus while he was playing at Genoa. He was a pure defensive player but he didn't dislike pushing forward sometimes to support the attack.
