Silvano Fontolan was a centre back. His career began at Como, where he played 279 matches and scored 9 goals from 1974 to 1983. In the middle, the 1978-79 season at Inter. He transferred to Hellas Verona in 1983, playing 197 games and scoring 9 goals in five seasons, winning the 1984-85 Serie A. He retired in 1989 after a season at Ascoli.
Fontolan was a very strong defender, nicknamed Corazziere for that reason. His unlucky season at Inter, confirmed him as a perfect player for smaller teams, even though he reached more than that with Hellas Verona. He didn't have an elegant touch and, understandably, he was more prone to defend rather than set up the play. In fact, his qualities were very helpful in the defence, especially his header ability. Actually though, his headers made him very effective in the opposing box as well during his time at Hellas Verona. His main task was to mark constantly the most dangerous forward or to anticipate him with the head. Due to his imposing size and not very high speed though, he had troubles against small and quick strikers. Anyway, he was a fair player, who rarely made hard and dangerous tackles, combining strength and a not bad technique, even though the first served exactly to compensate his technical gap. Nice first time goal ... 37604/?t=6 Very good header
