Lamagni was a right back and, in his late career, also sweeper and centre back. He spent almost his entire career at Cagliari, playing 337 matches and scoring 5 goals. He played also for Empoli and Torres. He retired in 1985 after being captain of Cagliari for a few years.
Lamagni was a short defender but gifted with toughness and great determination. Because of these characteristics he was nicknamed Arcigno, which means "grim". He made though several fauls due to his strong playstyle. Even the most feared strikers had troubles against him. Not easy to dribble, he could defend successfully against the likes of Fanna, Galderisi, Virdis among others. He used to challenge the bigger strikers by waiting them and not pressing. He had good sprint, useful to recover balls from the opponents or to save them on the goal-line, sometimes even with acrobatic kicks. He could support the attack well with decent crosses or shots. He scored an incredible goal with a bicycle kick from near the edge of the box against Ascoli in 1981.
