INFO:

Park Kyung-hoon was a prominent South Korean footballer who made his name as one of the country’s leading right-backs during the 1980s and early 1990s. After developing through Cheonggu High School and Hanyang University, he spent most of his club career with POSCO Atoms (Pohang Steelers), where he became an important figure and won the K League MVP award in 1988. At international level, he was a key player for South Korea and represented the national team at the 1986 and 1990 FIFA World Cups.

Park Kyung-hoon was regarded as a pioneer of the overlapping full-back in South Korean football, yet he still remained, above all, a classic defensive right-back. He generally stayed deeper than today’s more attack-minded full-backs, often tucking in to help cover the center-backs, especially against stronger opposition. When opportunities came, he supported the attack in a direct and economical way, usually by overlapping, crossing, or playing incisive forward passes rather than combining through complicated patterns. His crosses and long passes were solid, and his game was defined by his speed over distance, strong mentality, and dependable physicality. Those qualities made him not only effective going forward in measured moments, but also a highly trustworthy marker who could hold his own against world-class attackers such as Diego Maradona and Rubén Sosa. He also had a good leap, although heading was mediocre.
