INFO:
Matteoli was a defensive or central midfielder, considered one of the best ever players from Sardinia. He played for Como during the 1970s and 1980s, with several loans to other teams. In 1985-86 he had a season at Sampdoria before joining Inter, where he had his best time: 166 games, 8 goals, led the team to win the 1988-89 Serie A and was called up for Italy 6 times. His career went on brilliantly when he transferred to Cagliari in 1990: 146 matches and 7 goals, leading the team to the 1993-94 UEFA Cup. He retired in 1995 after a season at Perugia. He had for five years the record for the fastest goal in Serie A when he scored against Cesena after only 9 seconds in 1988.
Matteoli was a playmaker with great tactical intelligence. He was fair, dynamic, not too fast but gifted with excellent technical abilities. Accurate with both feet as well as the outside and first time touches, he was an exceptional passer and could set up the play very well. In fact, despite having started his career as attacking midfielder, at Inter he became highly efficient in front of the defence thanks to his speed of thought and ideal abilities to trigger the action of the team. He liked also to push forward whenever he could and try a long range shot. When he was on loan at Reggiana, he was nicknamed "Maradona of the poor" because he was part of a small team but his touch of the ball was considered not far from that of Maradona. During his time at Cagliari he was also an able penalty taker.
