Darwis is a former centre-back and sweeper. He spent almost his entire career at Persib Bandung where he made 228 appearances and scored 12 goals from 1983 to 1998. He also filled the captain role. He played for Malaysian team Kelantan in 1989. He capped for Indonesia 53 times and scored 6 goals from 1987 to 1997 and was team captain from 1993 to 1997.
A legend of both Persib Bandung and the Indonesia national team, Darwis didn't have a definite position during his youth career and became a defender following an 1982 friendly between Persib Bandung and South Korea. He was an expert in defensive duties as he was always ready to step up to challenge an opponent one-on-one whenever a teammate wasn't able to stop him. Tall ─ for Indonesia's standards ─ and strong, he was feared by the strikers who often thought twice before trying to get past him. Even though his main task was to protect the defense, he was known for his ability to support the attack. In fact, he could score from long range thanks to an accurate and powerful shot.
