Gillespie is a former centre back and side back, capable of playing as defensive midfielder. His career started in 1977 at Falkirk. He signed for Coventry City one year later, spending five seasons at the club, making 205 appearances and scoring 6 goals. He then had his best time at Liverpool, where he played 216 matches and scored 16 goals from 1984 to 1991 despite suffering some injuries. He retired in 1997 after a few years at Celtic and an unlucky comeback at Coventry City as he played his last 3 games in 1994, forced to stop due to a serious knee injury. He capped for Scotland 13 times.
Gillespie was a graceful, confident and classy defender, excellent both in the center and side of the defence. Liverpool signed him for his coolness and calculating approach to the game. Gillespie once mentioned in an interview that his tackling was his weakest quality. In reality, his tackles were often excellent. He was overall good in all aspects as he could anticipate his opponent, intercept and recover the ball, win aerial challenges with his jump and heading skill, and start attacking plays with good pinpoint passes. Gillespie also liked pushing forward, carrying the ball from his own half, exchanging passes and sometimes scoring some good goals. He even scored a hat trick against Birmingham City on 26 April 1986, although the third goal came from penalty.
