Aitken played 15 years for Celtic and is best remembered for captaining the club to the league title in the centenary year of 1988. He was captain of both Celtic and Scotland in the late 80s. Aitken was a powerful player equally comfortable in defence or midfield, always happy to join the attack and lead his team forward. He would sometimes switch positions during games too, like the 1985 Scottish Cup final where he moved into midfield and totally turned the game around to come back from 0-1 and win the trophy. He had huge determination and could always be seen leading by example and fighting until the very end. He was a good goalscorer too and strong in the air, and could even send some nice passes forward. Although his first touch was sometimes heavy and he wasn't very agile which is probably why he didn't become a full time midfielder. |

Wasn't he stronger? I'd have him at 88-89 BAL |

I originally had him at 88, when he started running he was like a train, but I lowered it to try and balance him a bit. I mean, he's already quite a physical monster with these stats so I didn't want to make him too good. |

Fair, I mostly watched him play CB, so he didn't really get to show those forward runs a lot, the same with other values like ATT and AGG, that don't show too much while playing in defence. The rest of the set is more or less what I saw on those games I watched. |

I don't know if you've seen the 1985 Scottish Cup final but it's a perfect example of him going forward a lot, he starts as a defender then goes into midfield for the last 20 minutes or so and assists the winning goal. He also played in midfield at the 1986 World Cup. In the European games or Scotland games for example I'm sure he would have stayed back more whereas playing in the Scottish league he liked to go forward very often. You can see that in a lot of the games against Rangers or in this compilation: |
