INFO:

Jozef Chovanec was a legendary Slovakian libero or midfielder, one of the best liberos in Europe in the mid 80s. Chovanec was a very attacking libero, a player with elegant technique and excellent long range passing, while also being a very good free kick and penalty taker. His long legs helped him keep the ball while under pressure and he liked to dribble his way out of tight situations. When defending he liked to leave his defensive line and move forward to close down the player with the ball; this helped him start counterattacks when winning the ball back as his good vision allowed him to play the ball forward quickly. Despite his height he didn't have great aerial abilities so he actually often took corner kicks which were quite dangerous, since he could generate good curl with the inside of his boot, something he also used to great effect when shooting from free kicks. He had good long range shooting too with a pretty powerful shot. In possession he was a very comfortable player and started every single attacking move from his deep position before moving forward with his team. Although he possessed decent speed for a tall defender, he was sometimes slow to get back after venturing upfield and could leave space exposed behind him for the opposition to exploit. He could also look clumsy sometimes when defending and give away fouls although he was often good at anticipating danger. Chovanec is one of the most legendary defenders of Sparta Prague and Czechoslovakian football. He was Czechoslovakian Player of the Year in 1986 and won 52 caps for his country.
