Chris Woods is a former English goalkeeper probably best remembered for his time at Rangers and for being Peter Shilton's backup and initial successor in the England squad. He was a very good goalkeeper, whose main qualities were his calmness and his great reflexes, especially in 1-on-1 situations. He was also pretty agile for his height, being able to get down quickly to stop low shots, and he had strong hands which helped beat away powerful shots from distance. His main weakness was an average leap which gave him trouble with crosses into the box, although this was helped by the main defenders in front of him being Richard Gough and Terry Butcher who were both excellent in the air. He was a fairly conservative goalkeeper who didn't leave his line very often, but his positioning when closing down the angle for the strikers was very good. From November 1986 to January 1987 he set a British record by playing 1196 consecutive minutes of competitive football without conceding a goal, and he only conceded 1 goal in his first 12 caps for England. With his national team he played one game at Euro 1988 and was England's starting goalkeeper at Euro 1992 as England went out at the group stages. He was also in the squad for two World Cups but didn't play a game as Peter Shilton was the undisputed starter.
