Gareth Barry is the player with the highest number of appearances in premier league (and still counting). He is one of the last great players that emerged from Aston Villa academy. He started as a defender, but as he grew as a player his basic position changed, he moved to midfield. He was a left midfielder at first not gifted with great speed but he had good technical abilities, especially passing which helped him to provide great crosses from the left side or from corners. When Martin O'Neill became a manager of Aston Villa, he converted Barry into a central midfielder position where he gave his best performances. He was a leader, a great contributor on both sides of the pitch. He was also selected as a penalty taker. In later years he drastically lost his speed, but improved his positioning and defensive play and became reliable defensive midfielder. He won one Premier League and one FA Cup, both trophies with Manchester City. His international career lasted for twelve years and he played for England in 53 games. That number would have been much bigger if Sven-Göran Eriksson called him more than twice for the NT during his four year spell on England's bench.
