Paintsil is a former right-back. His career started in 1999 at Berekum Arsenal in Ghana. He also played for Liberty Professionals, still in Ghana, in 2000-01 as well as Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel between 2002 and 2006. He eventually transferred to England, playing for West Ham United between 2004 and 2006, and Fulham between 2008 and 2011, making 24 and 91 appearances respectively. He retired in 2016 following underwhelming experiences with Leicester City, Hapoel Tel Aviv, and in South Africa with Santos and Maritzburg United. He capped for Ghana 91 times between 2001 and 2013.
Paintsil was a good side-back, gifted with great stamina, solid pace, technical qualities, and good strength despite a thin physique. Even though he was a skilled dribbler who could challenge an opponent one-on-one, he often tried to set up the attack with a pass or provide a long ball to his teammates in the opposing area, showing good understanding with his teammates. However, his ball distribution wasn't consistently accurate as it wasn't uncommon for him to miss easy passes. Paintsil wasn't always particularly active in defence, but he could be careful when blocking a cross attempt. His tackles, though, were sometimes late and caused fouls. He was usually in charge of throw-ins as he was capable of sending long ones.
