INFO:
Julio Dely Valdés (brother of Jorge and Armando) was a centre forward. After an early career in Panama and Argentina, he played in Uruguay for Club Nacional, scoring 46 goals − 110 is the reported total number, probably considering also minor trophys − in 89 matches from 1989 to 1993. He then joined Cagliari for two seasons, scoring 26 goals in 78 games and forming a great couple of strikers with Luís Oliveira. He joined Paris Saint-Germain in 1995, spending again two seasons, scoring 27 times in 80 matches. He transferred to Spain in 1997, playing first for Real Oviedo and then for Málaga, spending three seasons in each team: 103 matches and 39 goals for the Oviedistas; 121 games and 47 goals for los Blanquiazules. He retired in 2006 after another season at Club Nacional and a couple in Panama. The numbers of international caps and goals are uncertain but he at least played 32 matches and scored 17 goals for Panama.
Arguably the greatest ever player from Panama, Dely Valdés was a powerful striker, accurate with both feet, in possession of great technical qualities and an exceptional sense of goal. He was very efficient inside the box thanks mainly to an outstanding heading ability combined with an impressive leap. He was very acrobatic, fast and gifted with a dashing sprint on short distances thanks to which he could easily free himself from the marking. Known in South America as van Basten nero, he gained in Uruguay also the nickname Manteca (which means "butter") because he melted the defences with his movements just like heat melts butter.
