Schillaci is a former centre forward. His career began in 1982 at Messina, where he played 219 matches and scored 61 goals between Serie C and Serie B. He transferred to Juventus in 1989, scoring 21 goals in 50 matches in his first season. The following two were less prolific since he scored 15 times in 82 games. After two not very successful seasons at Inter between 1992 and 1994, he joined Japanese team Júbilo Iwata. In the "Land of the Rising Sun", he made 100 appearances from 1994 to 1997, scoring 68 goals, 31 of which in 1995. He gained 16 caps for Italy, scoring 7 goals, almost all of them during the 1990 FIFA World Cup, where he was the tournament top scorer.
Schillaci was a very quick striker especially on short distance and possessed oustanding reaction, excellent sense of goal and very good technique. He was right-footed but accurate with the left too and possessed a tremendous shot from long range as well as superb shot technique with volleys and overhead kicks. Usually a great opportunist, he liked creating space for his teammates when he was unable to score. He also was very good at taking indirect free kicks, deliving accurate and powerful shots after a teammate moved the ball with a short touch. Sometimes criticized for his short size and apparent weakness in the air, he scored two headers at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, one of them against Czech Republic when he beat two very tall defenders, even though he took advantage of his reaction and opportunism rather than his pure aerial ability.
