Berti was a central and defensive midfielder, capable to play on the flank as well. He spent most of his career at Inter, scoring 41 goals in 312 matches from 1988 to 1998. Some injuries forced him to miss many matches throughout his career. He played also for Parma, Fiorentina, Tottenham Hotspur, Alavés and Australian club Northern Spirit, where he retired in 2000. He capped 39 times for Italy, scoring 3 goals.
Berti was an excellent player. Gifted with dynamism and outstanding stamina, he was hard to stop when he started a progression forward. He always considered himself an inside midfielder but he actually was an enforcer who combined great creativity with concentration and agonistic grit, dominating the midfield. He could make long runs at high speed from one half of the field to the other while dribbling opponents, then score or pass the ball, often before going inside the opposing box to take advantage of his reaction near the goal. He was tall and had good strength but he was also astute in the box, falling many times after receiving a faul. He was capable with long range shots and headers but seemed to be less accurate in favorable situations in front of the goalkeeper. Considered the "man of the derby", he seemed especially unstoppable against Milan. He wasn't great in terms of tactical intelligence but he still had a good passing ability with both feet. It's said that he was very narcisist and during a half-time when Inter was losing 1-0 against Milan, Walter Zenga punched him because he was caring about fixing his hair instead of concentrating. Despite his love for nightlife, he could have great performances in the field. short documentary a top 10 goals , , , , , , , passes and crosses , , , , headers , , a few shows of speed , volleys scores after resisting a challenge from Vierchowod
