A man who can play any position, can be used as a libero, man-marker or in defensive midfield and has a regular place in the Swedish selection in the position of left full-back, meanwhile in Admira he was midfield playmaker. Ljung is a versatile defender, he keeps an overview and can also set offensive accents as a midfielder. Rather inconspicuous all-rounder, Ljung's other strengths are good positioning, sophisticated technique, reliability and strength in duels. He is also an excellent header which is his main weapon. As a youth player Ljung played in Lunds BK, before Malmö FF bought him in 1985. It was not until the 1987 season that Ljung broke into the starting eleven. Even though MFF won the Allsvenskan five years in a row, 1985–89, there were only two SM golds, as it was the playoffs at the time. For Roger Ljung, it was only one SM gold in 1988. In the summer of 1989, Ljung moved to Swiss Young Boys where Tord Grip was the coach, and the following year to league rival FC Zürich. In 1991 Ljung changed clubs again, this time to Admira Wacker where he had his best years with 26 goals in 81 games. He went in December 1993 to Turkish Galatasaray where Ljung became Turkish champion, but in the summer before the WC 1994 started, he finished with German MSV Duisburg. After the WC, Ljung suffered a groin hernia and could only play 13 games when Duisburg was relegated from the Bundesliga. He won 59 caps for the Sweden national team, and represented his country at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 1992, as well as the 1994 FIFA World Cup where Sweden finished third. After retiring from professional football in 1995, Ljung became a sports agent. He started his own agency in Lomma, Roger Ljung Promotion AB, being at the time one of only three licensed agents in the country; newspaper Aftonbladet considered him to be Sweden's most successful agent. |
