Jones is a former side-back, mainly on the right. His career started in 1987 at Crewe Alexandra. In 1991, he transferred to Liverpool where he spent the majority of his career, making 243 appearances in seven seasons. He retired in 1999 after a forgettable short spell at West Ham where he played only one match. He capped for England 8 times.
Possibly one of the best side-backs in England during the 1990s, Jones was often named MVP and later praised by legends such as Steve McManaman, Zinedine Zidane, Luís Figo and Roberto Carlos. A right-back for most his Liverpool career and was turned into a left-back under coach Roy Evans, Jones was a defensive player who never scored. He was distinguished by his skill and high speed that troubled the opposition. Even though he wasn't a scorer, he liked to push forward to deliver fast crosses and more rarely to attempt the shot. Then, he would defend too as he could control two men against opposing teams that had both side back and winger attacking constantly. In fact, Jones could rely in excellent covering and slide tackling abilities other than his quickness. Unfortunately, a series of injuries to his knee, shin and back limited his career and led to an early retirement.
