INFO:

Billy McKinlay was a Scottish midfielder most known for his years at Dundee United and Blackburn. He started his career as a promising attacking midfielder but after some serious injuries he moved into a deeper central midfield position and later became a midfield anchor. He retained his technical skills from his early years and his main strengths were his composure on the ball and passing ability. He could reliably dribble his way out of tight situations and find his teammates with precise passes. At Dundee United he was their main midfield playmaker and creative player, while at Blackburn he formed a solid partnership with Tim Sherwood, with McKinlay usually being the more defensive player of the two. He had some good shooting skills too, scoring some great goals from outside the box during his career. He wasn't very quick, and he wasn't really a natural defender as his tackles weren't often clean, but he showed aggression and commitment when defending. Unfortunately his career was often interrupted by injuries and this lack of stability and consistency maybe led to him not reaching his full potential, although he had a respectable career in both Scotland and England. He also played in both Euro 96 and World Cup 98 with the Scottish national team and earned 29 caps in total.
