Berg was a right-back and centre back. He started his professional career in his own country playing for Vålerenga and Lillestrøm between 1988 and 1993. He then transferred to Blackburn Rovers. Here he had four great seasons, winning the 1994-95 Premier League and playing 185 matches and scoring 4 goals always as first choice, mostly as right-back. In 1997 he joined Manchester United where his primary position became centre back. He won two more Premier Leagues and the 1998-99 UEFA Champions League with the Red Devils even though he wasn't always a regular starter and missed many matches due to physical problems. He played 103 games and scored 3 goals with Manchester United in three seasons before going back to Blackburn Rovers. He played 102 more games and scored 3 times with the club that made him famous before playing his last season at Rangers in 2003-04. Berg also capped for Norway 100 times and scored 9 goals.
Berg was a very reliable defensive but also creative full back able to send very accurate long passes forward. He liked in fact advancing to take set pieces but he rarely passed the center of midfield during normal actions. As centre back he showed strength, playing with intelligence and composure, making fierce tackles and being excellent at anticipating the ball especially with the head.
