INFO:

Pierluigi Benedettini was a goalkeeper who spent his whole career at San Marino in the Italian Serie D from 1987 to 1995, being the club's regular goalkeeper. The first ever San Marino national team goalkeeper, he won 25 caps, plus 5 more in unofficial games.
Benedettini was strong, gifted with decent reaction, leap, sprint and could save the ball with the feet, showing a basic technique. On the other hand he wasn't good in 1-on-1 situations. Most times he was out of the goal, in the middle of the box, displaying a bad positional sense and giving his opponents the chance to score from every position with no problem. His purpose was probably to cover the spaces and the goal but his non-professional status and the inferior level of training clearly influenced negatively his performances which already were far from being remarkable. He played his best match for the NT certainly in 1993 against England, where he conceded six goals but also showed some good saves, including a memorarable penalty save against David Platt which earned him the nickname "L'eroe di Wembley" ("The Hero of Wembley").
