Cappioli was a central midfielder, capable to play also as attacking or right side midfielder. He spent most of his career at Cagliari, playing around 150 matches and scoring 25 goals from 1988 to October 1993. He would've played more games if he didn't have a bad injury because of which he missed the entire 1991-92 season. He left the Rossoblu to join Roma, where he played 110 times and scored 19 goals until 1996. He earned a cap for Italy while he was playing for the Giallorossi. He played also for Udinese, Atalanta, Bologna, Perugia, Palermo and Taranto, where he retired in 2003.
Cappioli was a strong player gifted with good feet. Coach Claudio Ranieri used him mainly on the right flank when he joined Cagliari to take advantage of his good speed and great spirit. He was nicknamed "crazy horse" because his playstyle in his early years reminded of Domenghini's. Cappioli came back better than ever after the injury. He added both quantity and quality to the team and chose perfectly the timing to intercept the ball or to insert himself in the box. Thanks to this characteristic in addition to an accurate heading ability, he scored many goals. He could be dangerous also from the distance thanks to a powerful shot and the ability to use the outside with both feet.
