INFO:

Ibrahim Youssef is widely celebrated as one of the greatest defenders and sweepers (liberos) in the history of both Egyptian and African football. His exceptional defensive style and commanding presence on the pitch during the late 1970s and 1980s earned him a spot in the prestigious MasterCard African Team of the 20th Century. Youssef played primarily as a sweeper (or traditional libero). He excelled at reading the game, organizing the defensive line, and cleaning up behind other defenders with incredible tactical astuteness. He was unique for a defender of his era because he possessed the composure and skill of a midfielder. He was highly capable of safely playing out from the back, distributing the ball accurately, and orchestrating attacks from deep. In fact, he was recognized as the best playmaker at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations. Nicknamed "The Black Deer", he was famous for his graceful movement, rapid acceleration, and incredible agility. This allowed him to quickly track back and dispossess fast attackers smoothly. Rather than relying on reckless or overly aggressive tackling, Youssef was renowned for his "elegant" style of defending. He utilized perfect positioning, clean timing, and intelligence to neutralize offensive threats. Standing out as a tall, imposing figure, he dominated aerial duels, making him a crucial asset both in clearing crosses and defending set-pieces. Youssef's standout attributes translated into substantial individual and team success: He was named the Best Libero at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations. His elite defensive prowess was so widely respected across the continent that he finished 2nd in the France Football African Player of the Year awards in 1984 and 3rd in 1985—an incredibly rare achievement for a defender. He was voted the Egyptian Footballer of the Year multiple times.
