INFO: Aldemar dos Santos, known as Aldemar, was a Brazilian footballer who played as a defender. In 1948, encouraged by friends, Aldemar participated in Vasco da Gama's tryouts and, after performing well, joined the club, playing for the youth team. In 1951, he was promoted to the senior team, but was soon sold to Santa Cruz in 1954. At Santa Cruz, Aldemar played a key role in winning the 1957 Pernambuco Championship, ending a 10-year streak without a state title. Besides being team captain, Aldemar scored a penalty in the final against Sport. He also participated in matches for the "Selecionado" Pernambucano team of the time, a team made up of the best players from the state to compete in the then-current Brazilian championship, contested by selected players from all states. In early 1959, Aldemar arrived at Palmeiras. That same year, he had outstanding performances in the Campeonato Paulista, which Palmeiras won, scoring Pelé in the finals. Aldemar was considered one of Pelé's greatest goal scorers, a fact Pelé himself admitted. With Palmeiras, Aldemar also won the 1960 Campeonato Brasileiro and the 1963 Campeonato Paulista. After his strong performances in 1959, Aldemar was called up to the Brazilian national team for the 1960 Copa Roca. He was part of the 1962 World Cup squad but was cut from the squad. This led to several problems with alcohol and depression. After leaving Palmeiras, Aldemar played for América-MG and Guarani, the club where he ended his career in 1966. That same year, he was hired as coach of Santa Cruz, but was unable to make his debut because, suffering from rapidly developing amnesia, Aldemar got lost in Recife, until a friend found him and brought him back to Rio de Janeiro. Without proper medication regimen, his health rapidly deteriorated. His death occurred in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, on January 21, 1977, an event shrouded in controversy. The main one is that he was run over.
