INFO: Djalma Bezerra dos Santos, the Djalma who played for Sport Recife, Vasco da Gama, and Bangu, was born in Recife. He began his career at Sport, where he debuted in 1937 and won the Pernambuco title in 1938, playing alongside Ademir de Menezes. He also won more two championships in subsequent years with Sport, in 1941 and 1942. In total, he scored 44 goals for Sport Recife. In 1943, his former teammate asked Vasco da Gama's board to bring Djalma of Pernambuco, which was promptly granted, and in 1943, Djalma signed with Vasco da Gama. Djalma didn't have a fixed position at Vasco da Gama, playing as a midfielder, right winger, and left winger. When necessary, he adapted as a midfielder (currently a defensive midfielder) and even as a defender. The newspapers of the time nicknamed him "the man with seven instruments." He was naturally a very versatile striker. He played an important tactical role on the team that became known as the "Expresso da Vitória." Playing in the midfield, Djalma offered greater freedom to Ademir Marques de Menezes. With Vasco, he won the "Torneios Relâmpagos" in 1944 and 1946, the four-time championship municipal title in 1944/45/46/47, the undefeated Carioca Championships in 1945 and 1947, and the 1948 South American Championship. He started most of the matches in all these campaigns.
