Nelson da Conceição was a Brazilian footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Nelson rose from being a chauffeur to become
a great goalkeeper, idolized by Vasco and recognized by many as the greatest goalkeeper in
the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s.
The young Nelson da Conceição made his soccer debut for Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama at the age of 19, in the 1919 Torneio Início tournament. In the year of his debut, he was pejoratively nicknamed “Chauffeur” (driver), as this was his profession, which at the time was considered merely manual and subordinate, unsuitable for amateurs who played soccer at the time.
He was the first goalkeeper to win a championship with Vasco, the first Vasco player to be called up to the Brazilian national team, and the first black goalkeeper to play for the Brazilian and Rio de Janeiro state teams, Nelson faced the obstacles of racial discrimination and social prejudice and overcame them thanks to his talent and technical skill. Nelson was called up to the Rio de Janeiro state team in 1923 and to the South American Championship that same year, defending the Brazilian national team six times. He established himself as the great goalkeeper of the Federal Capital(Rio) and, even after the Brazilian team's poor performance in the 1923 South American Championship,
he returned from Argentina acclaimed for his performances :

brasileiros, sustentaram por 90 minutos de jogo, as fortes cargas dos
adversários, mantendo ou obrigando a estes, um trabalho intenso, para
a conquista de um goal.

In 1924, the year Rio de Janeiro soccer split into two entities, an event that sparked the famous "Resposta Histórica", Nelson helped Vasco win the Metropolitan League championship again, this time undefeated.
Nelson's quality led to him being accepted by the sporting world,
including the elite who coordinated the biggest leagues of the time. The same press that
had previously denounced him now praised his performances and his character. Nelson earned
the nickname “international keeper,” which stayed with him until his death in 1942.
On the eve of the 1926 championship, the newspaper 'O Imparcial' published
a cover photo of the great Nelson, identifying him as a star player in the
championship. The image was Nelson as he really was, without fictitious dialogues of a
pejorative nature or his image being highlighted for certain physical aspects that
characterized him as black. A sensitive contrast to the way he had been
portrayed by the same newspaper in 1919 and also by the newspaper 'O Paiz'.
