INFO : Isaías Benedito da Costa, or simply Isaías, was a former Brazilian striker. He began his career at Madureira alongside the brilliant Jair Rosa Pinto and Lelé. The Three Stooges, as they were known, were signed by Vasco in one fell swoop in 1942. One of the highlights of his early career was his backheel goal against former goalkeeper Gijo, while still playing for Madureira, where he reached 93 career goals in just 89 games. He was the first player on record to score a "backheel goal" in professional football. According to the newspapers of the time, the backheel goal was only seen in a few pick-up games, but Isaías decided to bring the fun to the biggest stage of Brazilian football. At Vasco, he found a club trying to emerge from crisis with a major overhaul, and he helped form the greatest team of all time. He was a strike partner for other top scorers and became a great passer, the most efficient player on the Expresso da Vitória team, increasingly demonstrating his completeness. Isaías's career totals include 215 appearances, 175 goals, and 64 assists. He achieved these feats in less than seven years as a professional. At the start of the 1947 season, after a period of injury and gradual recovery, Vasco suffered a severe blow when Isaías contracted tuberculosis. Complications arose during his hospitalization, and unfortunately, Isaías passed away prematurely, leaving Vasco fans deeply saddened.
