Nélio was one of the most talented attacking midfielders to emerge from Flamengo’s youth academy in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1971, he developed alongside the "golden generation of 1990" that included players such as Djalminha, Marcelinho Carioca, Paulo Nunes and Júnior Baiano. After shining in the youth ranks, he earned promotion to Flamengo’s first team and quickly became known for his creativity and technical ability.

A versatile attacking player, Nélio could operate as an attacking midfielder, second striker or in the flanks. Nicknamed “Marreco,” he was admired for his dribbling skills, acceleration, close ball control and vision. Although not physically imposing, he compensated with agility, flair and an instinct for creating chances in the final third.

During his years with Flamengo, Nélio played an important role in one of the club’s transitional generations. He helped the Rubro-Negro win major titles, including Copa do Brasil in 1990 and the Brazilian Championship of 1992, year which he was at his peak and was awarded a "Bola de Prata" from Placar Magazine, as one of the best players of the championship. His performances during this period earned him recognition as one of Flamengo’s standout attacking players of the early and mid 1990s.

Although he later had spells with clubs such as Guarani, Fluminense, Atlético Paranaense and several other teams in Brazil and abroad, Nélio’s strongest connection always remained with Flamengo. He made more than 300 appearances for the club and became a fan favorite thanks to his entertaining style of play and love to club's shirt.

I had to take some time away... My life gave a 180º in those lasts months, had a few personal losses, but new job, new city, back into college... Took me some time to adapt to the new routine and have some time left for doing player sets.
