Born in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro, Luís Carlos was a versatile and gifted player who played as forward, usually by the right side, but who was also capable of playing as a midfielder on both sides and even centralized as attacking midfielder.
Beginning his career in Flamengo's youth academy, Luis Carlos was promoted to the senior squad in 1957 and gradually gained a foothold in the team, serving as the starting replacement for winger Joel (a World Cup winner with Brazil in 1958) who had transferred to Valencia in Spain.
And despite not quite being at the same level as the then World Champion, Luis Carlos took over as a starter and was an important part of the team that won the 1959 Campeonato Carioca and the Hexagonal de Lima that same year (a prototype of what would become the Copa Libertadores), scoring important goals in both tournaments.
Possessing a keen eye for goal, Luis Carlos scored 77 goals for Flamengo in 196 games and was also part of the team that won the 1961 Campeonato Carioca, although he was no longer a starter.
In mid-1961, Luis Carlos transferred to Náutico, where he had a brief stint. The following year, he moved to Atlético Mineiro, where he won the Minas Gerais State Championships in 1961 and 1962, having a distinguished stint with Galo Mineiro, scoring 21 goals in 53 games.
Finally, Luis Carlos retired in 1965, playing for Comercial de Ribeirão Preto in São Paulo. After retiring from football, the now former striker Luis Carlos earned a law degree and opened a law firm in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro.
