Info:

El-Fanagily played for the national team for over 17 years, playing in around 62 international matches between 1953 and 1970, during which time he participated in three Olympic Games and came fourth with the national team at the 1964 Tokyo Games, as well as being named best defender at the 1960 Rome Games.

One of his most famous goals for the national team was the one he scored from 35 yards against Italy in the final minutes, which secured a draw at the 1963 Mediterranean Games in Naples. Also noteworthy is the winning goal he scored against Libya in the last minute, after a pass from Shazli on the 18-yard line. The score was 2-2, and he fired a low shot into the right corner that slipped into the Libyan goal.

- Full of championships and achievements, he won seven league championships and six cups with Al-Ahly, alongside an incredible group of brilliant stars such as Saleh Selim, Taha Ismail, Adel Heikal, Al-Jawhari, Al-Dizawi, and Tarek Selim.

El-Fanagily was a great captain, famous for being the experienced and expert leader of the team, and was known for his great skill and accuracy in long-range shots, to the point that he was known as “the gunner,” as he was capable of scoring goals from far away. He was one of the best and most skilled shooters, and whenever Al-Ahly and the Egyptian national team found themselves in critical moments, he would come to the rescue with his lethal and accurate shots, his special and unique weapon. He was not just any player, but a talented player famous for creating goals with great precision and for creating goal scorers, but also for scoring spectacular goals.

El-Fanagily earned the nickname “The engineer” because he thought with his feet and played with his head, passing the ball with his feet and with precision, and was able to set the pace of the game, switching from defense to attack and vice versa according to the needs of the team. Al-Fanagily received more than one offer to play abroad, but he preferred to stay in Egypt, within the walls of his club, Al-Ahly.

- Anyone who hasn't seen Rafaat Al-Fangaly hasn't seen football in all its grandeur, beauty, and elegance. A player for Al-Ahly in the 1960s, if anyone can be called a football legend, it's him. He was known as "the architect of football" for his precise passes, his vision, and his goal-scoring ability.

- Rifaat El-Fanagily was a born leader. He had a remarkable ability to read a match within minutes of kickoff. He didn't hesitate to give instructions to his teammates, both veterans and juniors, on what needed to be done to change the outcome, stop a dangerous player, or exploit a gap or weakness in the opposing team. What he saw instantly, his intelligent and perceptive mind translated into a plan that he then instructed his teammates to execute. Perhaps this style bothered some players or members of the coaching staff, but the results on the pitch demonstrated El-Fanagily's brilliance, the effectiveness of his advice, and his profound understanding of the game. For this reason, El-Fanagily earned the title of the first and last engineer of Egyptian football.

El-Fanagily played for Al-Ahly from 1954 until his retirement in 1970. According to statistics, our star played around 650 matches for Al-Ahly during that period, scoring approximately 100 goals and creating countless opportunities for his teammates. He also played 150 matches for the national and military teams, scoring 40 goals and providing numerous assists. It's understandable that these statistics aren't exact, as accurate record-keeping of matches and goals wasn't possible at the time.

- El Fanagili also participated with the national team in two Olympic Games, in 1960 in Italy, where he was named the best defender in the world, and in 1964 in Tokyo. He qualified with the Egyptian team for the 1956 edition in Melbourne, Australia, but Egypt did not participate. He won the award for best player in Egypt in 1960, 1961, and 1962, and some of his most famous nicknames were "The Engineer," "The Gunner," and "The Master."

The story behind the historic goal

In one season, specifically the 1962–63 season, there was a final league match between Al-Ahly and Zamalek, and a draw would give Al-Ahly the league title, while Zamalek had to win to claim the title. It was a very important match for the media, as it would determine the league champion, and Al-Ahly was missing key players in this decisive match, such as Saleh Selim, Taha Ismail, Al-Gohary, and Mimi El-Sherbini, while Zamalek had a full squad full of big stars who made the difference, such as Hamada Imam, Ali Mohsen, Nabil Nasir, Abdu Nasha, Qutb, Wakin Hussein, Abu Regila, Ald, Ahmed Mustafa, and Omar El-Nour.

Captain Abdel Saleh Al-Wahsh, Al-Ahly's coach at the time, had no choice but to turn to some young players to compensate for the injuries and absences, so he lined up Aouli Matar as right winger and Abu Regila as full-back or sweeper for Zamalek. Breao played at left back, replacing Yaken Hussein, the king of coverage and star of the national team, while Mahmoud Al-Sais played as a forward in place of Taha Ismail, who was voted Egypt's best player in the 61-62 season.

The second experience was that of young Saeed Abu Al-Nour in Al-Ahly's central defense, and the captain in this match was Ref Al-Fangili. Everyone, from the fans to the media and the press, expected Zamalek to win easily and even achieve a crushing victory over Al-Ahly, but El-Fangaly had a different opinion and made a bet with Al-Ahly journalist Ahmed Farag, husband of artist Sabah, who presented the religious program Nour Ali Nour. During training before the match, he told him that he would score a goal over Zamalek goalkeeper K. Aldo, more than a meter above the ground, to which Farag replied that if he did so, he would give him fifty pounds, which at that time was a large sum of money.

The match began and everyone was surprised by Al-Ahly's teamwork, their deployment, and their magnificent performance. Al-Ahly took the lead thanks to a lethal assist from El-Fanagily. In the second half, El-Fanagily missed an easy goal after a mistake by Zamalek defender Ahmed Mostafa, who tried to correct the ball to pass it to Aldo, as he had promised, but Yaken Hussein saved the situation.

The goal came when Alwi Matar started with the ball on the right wing and dribbled past Abu Regila, who fell to the ground after a failed tackle, and sent the ball into the area, but Yaken Hussein got there first and cleared it with his head to the edge of the box, where El-Fangaly received it, deflected it to the left, but corrected it with his left thigh to his right leg and shot with great force, without mercy or compassion, to the left of Aldo, Zamalek's goalkeeper, thus fulfilling what he had said and promised.

After the goal, El-Fanagily ran joyfully toward the first-division stands and watched as banknotes were thrown at him from the box, as if he had been paid immediately the reward he had been promised. Tarek Selim closed the festival by scoring the third goal, ending the match with a hat trick and Al-Ahly being crowned league champions.
