Afonsinho was a midfielder who played for América-RJ, Flamengo, São Cristóvão, and Fluminense. The former athlete, who was also a member of the Brazilian national team from 1935 to 1942, died on February 20, 1997, at the age of 82, in Rio de Janeiro.
Born in Rio de Janeiro on March 8, 1914, Afonsinho began his career in 1931, playing for América-RJ. Two years later, he moved to Flamengo, where he stayed for only one season, playing 50 matches, with 18 wins, nine draws, 23 losses, and three goals.
With Afonsinho's arrival at São Cristóvão in 1935, he received his first call-up to the national team. He played for the Brazilian national team until 1942. Afonsinho was a starter in the 1938 World Cup, when the team coached by Ademar Pimenta achieved an unprecedented third place.
From São Cristóvão, Afonsinho signed for Fluminense in 1940. He spent six seasons with the Tricolor das Laranjeiras, where he won two Campeonato Carioca titles, in 1941 and 1946, the year he retired.
