With the reinforcements signed by president Américo Gasparini, the team grew stronger and Bengala became the fans' idol. Champion in 1928, he was one of the main architects of the second title in 1929 and the third in 1930, when, alongside Niginho, he was the star player of the team that earned the nickname Academia do Barro Preto, as well as ending América MG's ten-title streak.
In 1940, when Bengala became a coach, Palestra won its last title under its former name. Bengala then coached Botafogo in 1943, but returned to Belo Horizonte, where he coached Cruzeiro and the Minas Gerais state team, leaving professional soccer for good.
