At 16, he joined Sportul Studențesc Bucharest in the Second Division as a left winger. In 1937, he was promoted to the First Division with his team. From a very young age, he was an undisputed starter and a pillar of the team as a goalscorer. In the 1937–38 season, as in the following season, he secured the team's place in the league and reached the 1939 cup final, where they were defeated 0–2 by Rapid București. In the 1939/40 season, Popescu achieved the best result of his time at Sportul. With 14 goals, he finished fourth in the scoring charts. The following season, he came close to equaling his personal best with 13 goals, but the team only managed to finish in the middle of the table. Popescu played briefly for Carmen București in 1944, before returning to Sportul, then called Sparta București. There, despite scoring ten goals in twelve games in 1946, he failed to achieve promotion to the First Division and returned to Carmen. With his new club, he finished second in the 1946–47 season, the best result of his career, although he only scored four goals. In the summer of 1947, Carmen was dissolved and replaced by the newly founded army sports club, ASA București, which Popescu also joined. After barely staying in the league during his first year, Popescu had a poor season in 1948/49 and ended his playing career. Spoiler: show Spoiler: show |
