The family was large and poor, and José was the third of eight children. From a young age, young José had to work to help his parents a little. At age 9, he became a bricklayer's assistant, working on numerous farms. Despite the obvious difficulty of the job, Lopes always found time to play ball, which he loved. At 15, Lopes built his first detached wooden house. That same year, he began playing for the Batatais youth team, where he continued working as a bricklayer. In 1928, Zeca López began playing for the club's first team, playing as a winger. In 1931, López's life changed when the famous Senejo Barros, touring the Batatais region, noticed López and invited him to Corinthians. The first thing he did was take José López, who didn't want to leave the house, to the store and bought the poor soccer player fashionable shoes and a suit as a gift. After that, López couldn't refuse. López played for Corinthians for nine years, winning four São Paulo championships. His career ended in 1941, when he went with the club to play a friendly match against his former team, Batatais, in his hometown, and injured his knee in the match. López was unable to play soccer again. After Zeca's injury, López returned to his first job, building houses, investing all the money he earned from soccer in the business, and running the company with his wife. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsHEQl3RI50&t=79s See minute 2:27 Lopes gets rid of two Czechoslovakian players, they could confuse him with Leonidas, but that's not the case, Leonidas wore black socks without bandages in that match, while Lopes does wear them. |
