After graduating from Korea University, he spent his entire professional club career as a loyal "one-club man" for the Daewoo Royals, leading the team to three K League titles (1984, 1987, 1991) and earning the K League Most Valuable Player award in 1991. On the international stage, Chung was a cornerstone of the South Korean national team. He played a pivotal role in helping his country qualify for the 1986 FIFA World Cup—earning the Korean FA MVP honors during the qualifiers—and went on to feature in all three group matches in Mexico. He later captained the national squad at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. Chung was recognized in clean defending, fast reaction and an extraordinary jumping ability that allowed him to defend effectively in aerial duels against much taller attackers. He possessed solid speed, could keep up with rapid forwards like Galderisi and Altobelli. Beyond his defensive duties, Chung colud also deliver accurate forward passes with either foot, using both the inside and outside of his boot; he was notably more effective with sweeping long-range distribution than short exchanges.—and possessed a powerful long shot that made him a constant threat from distance. |
