Choi Soon-ho is one of South Korea’s standout attackers from the 1980s, remembered for producing big moments very early in his career and sustaining them for more than a decade. He made his name at the 1980 AFC Asian Cup, where he finished as the tournament’s top scorer at just 18, then went on to become a long-serving senior international (often listed at 100+ caps) through 1991. Choi competed in World Cup 1986 and 1990. At club level, he’s most closely associated with POSCO Atoms (the forerunner of today’s Pohang Steelers), had a spell with Lucky-Goldstar Hwangso (later LG Cheetahs/FC Seoul), and later played in France with Rodez.
Choi was valued as a complete attacking weapon who could operate as a striker or drop into an attacking-midfielder role to create. He was known for his clean ball control and all-around technique (dribbling, strength, passing, header and shooting power), plus pace and vision that let him both beat defenders and set up teammates. That mix repeatedly made life uncomfortable for Argentina and especially Italy’s defense in World Cup 1986.
