Attack/Defence Awareness Card: Attack MindedINFO:Clyde Best was one of the first Black footballers to make a significant impact in English top-flight football. Born in Bermuda in 1951, he joined West Ham United in 1968 at the age of 17 and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club, scoring 47 goals. Best played alongside notable names such as Geoff Hurst, Bobby Moore, and Trevor Brooking. At a time when racism was rampant in English stadiums, he showed remarkable resilience, becoming a trailblazer for Black players in a hostile environment. After leaving West Ham in 1976, he had spells with Feyenoord in the Netherlands, Tampa Bay Rowdies and Portland Timbers in the NASL, and Toronto Blizzard in Canada, continuing to build a respectable career abroad.
Standing at around 6 feet tall and strongly built, Clyde Best was difficult to dispossess and could hold off defenders with ease. He was fast for his size, skillful for his type of player and effective in link-up play. Best was a great header of the ball and could score with both feet and was particularly dangerous inside the box, often using his strength to create shooting opportunities under pressure. He was also praised for his work ethic and unselfishness, often creating chances for teammates as well as leading the line.
