Sebastián Domínguez is a former Argentine footballer who played as a central defender. Born in Buenos Aires (29/07/1980), he moved to Rosario as a child and joined the youth ranks of Newell's Old Boys, the same club where his father coached a young Lionel Messi. Domínguez made his professional debut for the Lepra in 1998, initially as a defensive midfielder, before coach Américo Gallego repositioned him as centre-back in 2004. Wearing the captain's armband, he helped Newell's win the 2004 Torneo Apertura, ending a twelve-year title drought. That same year, he was purchased by investment fund Media Sports Investment and loaned, alongside Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, to Brazilian club Corinthians, with whom he won the 2005 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. In January 2007, he returned to Argentina on loan to Estudiantes de La Plata under Diego Simeone, and then signed permanently with Club América of Mexico that December, winning the 2008 InterLiga before a serious injury and the club's worst-ever league finish led to his release. On January 27, 2009, Vélez Sarsfield signed him as a free agent; he quickly formed a reliable central defensive partnership, first with Nicolás Otamendi and later Fernando Ortiz, winning the 2009 and 2011 Clausura titles and reaching the semifinals of the 2011 Copa Libertadores. He added the 2012 Torneo Inicial, the 2012–13 Superfinal against his former club Newell's, and the 2013 Supercopa Argentina against Arsenal de Sarandí to his medal collection, reaching his 200th official appearance for Vélez that August. His contract was rescinded for economic reasons in January 2015, sending him back to Estudiantes, before he closed the circle with an eighteen-month loan return to Newell's in January 2016 and retired in June 2017, after nineteen professional seasons across Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico.
Domínguez did not pass through Argentina's youth national teams, and his call-up to the senior side came directly through his form at Vélez. On August 31, 2009, coach Diego Maradona called him up for the first time alongside club teammates Nicolás Otamendi and Emiliano Papa, and he made his debut days later, on September 5, 2009, starting a World Cup qualifier against Brazil that ended in a 1-3 defeat; four days after that, he started again in a 1-0 loss to Paraguay in Asunción. He later became a regular call-up under coach Alejandro Sabella, who named him captain for the 2011 and 2012 editions of the Superclásico de las Américas, a friendly series against Brazil in which Lionel Messi himself, in 2011, handed him the captain's armband. Sabella also called him up for the closing matches of the 2014 World Cup qualifying against Peru and Uruguay, though Domínguez was ultimately left out of Argentina's squad for the tournament, closing his international career without a major-tournament appearance. He went on to a long post-playing life in the game: he worked as a television panelist, joined Hernán Crespo's staff at Qatar's Al-Duhail in 2021, and moved into management himself, coaching Tigre in 2024, Vélez Sarsfield briefly in 2025, and Peru's Deportivo Garcilaso before taking charge of Central Córdoba in mid-2026.
