INFO:
Héctor Rodríguez Peña is a former center-back. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay (22/10/1968), he started his career in 1988, playing for Defensor Sporting. He stayed in the purple team from 1988 to 1993, being called up once for the National Team, in a friendly game against Costa Rica. After his time at the viola, "Samanta", -as he was called-, joined Deportivo Mandiyú, where he would also be called up once for the Uruguayan National Team, in another friendly game against Perú. For the algodoneros, Samanta played 48 games and scored 3 goals, before joining Colón de Santa Fe, where he would reach his highest level. In the red and black team, Rodríguez Peña played 109 games and scored 5 goals. During his time with Colón, Samanta played 8 games for the National Team, which included 3 games in the 1997 Copa América and 5 games in the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification, starting in all of them. He was loaned from Colón to Club Nacional in 1999, and after his contract with the sabalero finished, he signed for Bella Vista and later on for América de Cali, where he would win one Colombian First Division title. The last years of his career were spent in Racing de Montevideo, Everton de Viña del Mar, and Uruguay Montevideo, where he would retire aged 39 in 2007. What he did not possess in skill with the ball he made up for with physical power and a very brave defense; some considered Rodríguez Peña as an excessively physical and sometimes even dirty player, but at the same time he was an excellent leader on the field of play. He formed memorable central duos with his teammate at C.A. Colón, Luis Medero, and with his teammate on the national team Paolo Montero. Samanta in total played 10 games for Uruguay between 1991 and 1997, without scoring goals.
