INFO:
Alberto Quintano is a Chilean former footballer who played as a central defender or sweeper. Born in Santiago, Chile (26/04/1946), he made his professional debut on February 19, 1966, for Universidad de Chile. He coincided with the so-called "Ballet Azul," the legendary team of the Universidad de Chile that won six Chilean championships during the 1960s. That year, taking advantage of the fact that much of the team traveled to England for the World Cup, he secured a spot as the starting central defender. The following year, as a key player, he won his second title and was recognized as the best professional football athlete in Chile. Between 1968 and 1969, he won two metropolitan titles, a third league title, and the Francisco Candelori Cup. In 1970, he had a notable performance in the Copa Libertadores, reaching the semifinals, and he was named in the tournament's ideal team. In the late 1960s, he received offers from River Plate, Atlético Madrid, Lille, and Club América, but he ended up signing with Cruz Azul in 1971, becoming the team's first foreign player in history. He made his debut for the team on December 4, 1971, in a 3-0 victory against Zacatepec. On April 19, 1972, he lifted his first title on Mexican soil after defeating Alajuelense from Costa Rica 5-1 in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup, making them continental champions for the third time. That year, they faced Club América in the league final. In that match, Quintano, alongside Miguel Marín and Javier Guzmán, managed to neutralize the yellow team's offense, and they were crowned league champions for the third time in the team's history with a final score of 4-1. In the 1972-73 season, they once again won the championship after defeating Club León 2-1 in extra time, and secured the three-peat the following year against Atlético Español with a 4-2 aggregate score, with Quintano being a pillar in the "Máquina's" golden era. After losing in the Mexican Cup against América, they played the Champion of Champions Cup against the same team. Alberto had to miss out due to an injury, and with the final score of 2-1, he obtained his fifth and final title with the cementeros. In the following years, the team lost focus, and although they reached the finals in all tournaments, they failed to lift the title with Quintano on the field. He bid farewell to the team on January 8, 1977, in a tribute at the Estadio Azteca, becoming the first player from the club to receive such a ceremony, although he could not finish it as, in tears, he refused to do the victory lap. A beloved figure in Mexico, he returned to Universidad de Chile for the 1977 season, forming a central defensive partnership with Manuel Pellegrini, where the team finished fifth in the national tournament and was eliminated in the Copa Libertadores group stage. In 1978, they finished seventh in the Chilean championship. Then, in 1979, the club won the Copa Chile by defeating Colo-Colo 2-1 in the final. A year later, in 1980, the "U" was the runner-up in the national championship, and on 1981, they won the Pre-Libertadores Playoff against Colo-Colo, marking Quintano's final professional title. He ended his playing days with Universidad Católica and Magallanes.

He debuted in the Chilean National Team on August 15, 1967, under the direction of Alejandro Scopelli, in a friendly match against Argentina. He played several matches of this kind, earning a starting spot in the defense, and competed in the qualifiers for Mexico 1970, totaling four appearances. He repeated his performance, but this time for the 1974 FIFA World Cup in Germany, being key in the qualification for the tournament, having a great performance in the first leg of the playoff against the Soviet Union in Moscow where, thanks to a brilliant defensive effort, the Chilean team managed to draw 0-0 and qualify for the World Cup in Germany. In that World Cup, he formed a defensive duo with Elías Figueroa, and both were widely praised for their solidity in the national defense during the competition. He had an outstanding World Cup, acting as the leader in defense and playing all three group stage matches, with his performance against East Germany being remembered, as, to this day, Quintano holds the record for of 9 successful tackles in a single match of the World Cup. With the World Cup, Quintano consolidated himself as one of the greatest Chilean players in history and, alongside Figueroa, formed the best defense of the national team. In 1979, he made two appearances in the Copa América where Chile finished as runners-up and Quintano said goodbye to the national team in the first leg of the final against Paraguay on November 28, in Asunción, totaling 49 matches between 1967 and 1979.
